As a community leader, would you prioritize building a new youth centre or expanding services for seniors? Which would you choose and why?

**Question:**
You are a community leader with limited funding. You must choose between two priorities: building a new youth centre with sports facilities and after-school programs OR expanding services for seniors including meal delivery and social activities. Which would you choose and why? Explain your decision based on community needs.

**Model Answer (200 words):**

I would prioritize expanding services for seniors. This was a difficult decision because both groups deserve support, but my choice is based on demographics, the vulnerability of seniors, and the availability of other resources.

First, the senior population is growing rapidly. In most communities, the percentage of residents over 65 is increasing and will continue to do so for decades. Many seniors live alone, have limited mobility, and struggle with isolation. Meal delivery services keep them nourished and healthy. Social activities reduce loneliness, which has been shown to be as harmful to health as smoking. These services directly address urgent needs.

Second, seniors are particularly vulnerable. Youth have schools, sports leagues, libraries, and other community resources. Even without a dedicated youth centre, young people have places to go and activities to do. Seniors, especially those with limited mobility or income, often have nowhere to go. Their world shrinks as they age. Expanding services for them addresses a gap that no other institution fills.

Finally, seniors have given back to the community for decades. Many of them volunteered, paid taxes, raised families, and contributed to the neighbourhood for 50 or 60 years. Expanding services for seniors is a way of honouring that contribution and supporting them in their later years. Youth will become seniors one day and will benefit from the same services.

That said, youth are also important. A youth centre would provide positive activities, reduce crime, and help young people develop skills. Ideally, I would fund both. But forced to choose, services for seniors address a more urgent need for a more vulnerable population. I would expand senior services now and look for partnerships or grants to support youth programming separately. Both deserve attention, but seniors need it first.
