As a school principal, would you fund arts programs or sports facilities with limited budget?
**Question:**
You are a school principal with a limited budget. You must choose between two priorities: funding an arts program (music, drama, visual arts) OR funding additional sports facilities (gym equipment, sports teams). Which would you choose and why? Consider the benefits to students’ development and well-being.
**Model Answer (200 words):**
I would choose to fund the arts program, but I acknowledge that this is a difficult decision because both options have significant benefits for students.
I lean toward the arts program for three reasons. First, arts education develops skills that are often neglected in traditional academics. Music, drama, and visual arts teach creativity, self-expression, collaboration, and persistence. Students learn to take risks, accept criticism, and revise their work. These skills are valuable in any career, from engineering to business to healthcare.
Second, the arts provide an outlet for students who may not excel in sports or academics. For many students, the school day feels like a series of failures. A drama club or art class can be the place where they finally feel competent and valued. This sense of belonging can keep at-risk students engaged in school. I have known students who stayed in school primarily because of their band program or theatre group.
Third, arts programs are often more accessible to all students regardless of athletic ability. Sports teams tend to favour naturally athletic students, while arts programs welcome a wider range of participants.
That said, sports are also important. Physical activity improves mental health, teaches teamwork and discipline, and helps combat obesity. Ideally, every school would have both strong arts and strong sports programs. But if I must choose, I would prioritize the arts because of their unique contribution to creativity, emotional expression, and inclusivity.
I would then look for creative ways to support sports at low cost, such as partnerships with community centres or volunteer coaches.
