New washing machine stopped working after one week.

Question:
You bought a new washing machine from an appliance store. It stopped working after one week. You called the service department twice but they haven’t fixed it. Write a letter to the store manager. In your letter:

  • Describe the problem
  • Explain what you have done so far
  • Say what you want the store to do

Model Answer (Formal – 198 words):

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to formally complain about a washing machine (model WM-230, serial number 987654) that I purchased from your store on 2nd May. After only seven days of normal domestic use, the machine has ceased to function properly.

The specific issue is that the appliance fails to drain water after the rinse cycle. Furthermore, during the last wash, it emitted a loud grinding noise followed by a complete shutdown. I have checked the power supply and the filter, but neither is the cause. This is clearly a manufacturing defect.

Regarding my attempts to resolve the matter, I contacted your service department on 9th May and again on 12th May. On both occasions, I was assured that a technician would visit within 48 hours. However, to date, no technician has arrived, nor has anyone contacted me to reschedule or explain the delay. I also left a voicemail on 14th May, which has gone unanswered.

Given that the product remains under a two-year warranty, I request a full replacement at no additional cost, along with free collection of the defective unit. Furthermore, I expect compensation for the inconvenience caused. If I do not receive confirmation of these actions within seven days, I will escalate the matter to the consumer ombudsman.

I look forward to your prompt resolution.

Yours faithfully,

James Turner
